Plaster cast of a violet Amethyst crystal, a variety of quartz.

Striking geometrical structure comprising an undulating lattice of sharply defined hexagonal pyramidal crystals.

Derived from the Greek 'Amethystos' - 'A' ('Not'), 'Methysko' ('Intoxicated'), denoting the view of the Ancient Greeks that the stone would protect its owner from drunkenness - it was consequently worn as jewellery and carved into drinking vessels during this period. It was employed more generally in the Greco-Roman / Egyptian worlds as a gemstone carving medium, used for the creation of ornamental objects such as intaglios.

Variously revered during other historic periods as a stone that offered protection, wisdom and creative inspiration. Known as the 'dream stone' or 'Ahlamah' in Hebrew culture, and considered to be spiritually enhancing in Tibetan Buddhism.

Leonardo Da Vinci kept one of the crystals on his desk in the belief that they 'dissipate evil thoughts and quicken intelligence.'

A striking piece, mounted on a rebated plaster base for table-top display.

Dimensions (cm): Length 19, Width 15, Depth 7.5.

To the rear, hand-initialled and stamped with the Alexander Griffin maker's mark.

Every cast is made by hand, with a 4/6 week lead time. For more urgent orders please enquire.
