Plaster cast of a large scale portrait bust of Omphale, Queen of Lydia in Ancient Greek Mythology.

Depicted here wearing the lion’s pelt originally worn by Heracles’ in commemoration of his victory over the Nemean Lion. Heracles endured a period of servitude to Omphale, having been sold to her as a slave in punishment for his having murdered Iphitus. Omphale would later become Heracles’ second wife bearing him at least two sons, one of whom, Tyrsenus, would later migrate to Italy, giving the Tyrrhenians (/ Etruscans) their eponym.

Superb sculptural form, theatrical scale and museum provenance.

Dimensions (cm): 40 width x 63 height x 30 depth / plinth base - 19 depth x 39 width.

To the rear, hand-initialled and stamped with the Alexander Griffin maker's mark.
