Plaster cast of a Neoclassical bas relief plaque, after Thorvaldsen.

The mythological sun God Apollo, who presided over music, song, dance and poetry, as well as being the inventor of string music, was often portrayed as a companion to the nine muses - goddesses of the arts, science and literature. And so it is here in this scene, where Apollo plays his lyre and leads a celebration with the nine muses, whom he was said to visit on Mount Helicon where they lived.

The original work from which the piece is cast dates to the 1840s and is held by the Thorvaldsen museum in Copenhagen.

Exceptional and fine sculptural details.

Dimensions (cm): width 24.5 x height 12 x depth 1.5.

To the rear, hand-initialled and stamped with the Alexander Griffin maker's mark, and fitted with a brass 'D ring' for wall hanging from a single screw / nail / hook.

Every cast is made by hand, with a 4/6 week lead time. For more urgent orders please enquire.
